Do you remember the first time you stuck InnerSpeaker on and listened start to finish? Hearing the opening melodic hook spiral into and back from somewhere close to oblivion as 'It Is Not Meant to Be' begins meant floating on a sun kissed vibe. The first drop welcoming Kevin Parker's hallucinatory vocals in a style not dissimilar to Sgt. Pepper's era Lennon and McCartney, confirming a fresh, 21st Century take on psychedelic indie rock was going to help define the decade ahead. If Tame Impala's debut LP was a colourful, kaleidoscopic trip into soft and bouncy sonic environments, his latest is something altogether more monochrome, stark, and desolate. Deadbeat, as he has explained in an interview for the Klein/Ally Show, is about owning up to being "a self?deprecating fuck?up stuck in a negative feedback loop". It's brutally honest, predominantly quite quiet, tangibly tense and ultimately a very honest and human experience.
